Bork the Bold is the author of the Book of Dragons. He was once known as "Bork the Very, Very Unfortunate" due to his constant bad luck in practically everything. He tried to become a farmer and a sheep herder before he settled on becoming a fisherman. Despite his constant back luck, Bork was still able to survive all of his deadly dragons encounters and find a wife and even killed many dragons in self defense using a special dagger.
Bork decided--after many dragon encounters with multiple different dragons--that he had learned a lot of dragons mannerisms and habits and decided to classify each dragon he encountered. Eventually his notes became the book of dragons with all of his many classifications, earning the title "Bork the Bold".
In present time within the franchise, the Book of Dragons has been added to and revised, but is still a huge part of Viking culture. Bork even gets his own holiday on Berk, known as "Bork Week".
All of his private archives--thoughts extra/unfinished notes, recipes, and "interesting" sketches of his neighbors--and his special dagger were in the possession of Gobber (Bork's great-great grandson) but in We are Family, part 1 Hiccup's been entrusted with Bork's archives.
