WARNING: This description contains heavy spoilers for the entire episode.
The episode opens with Berk finally being a peaceful place where Vikings and Dragons work together to complete their daily tasks as they've been trying to achieve in the past two episodes. Suddenly, though, two dragons--a nadder and nightmare--begin to fight right around the farm animal's grazing grounds, scaring them immensely.
| Mulch miking |
Bucket and Mulch come in and shoo the dragons away and Mulch begins to milk the yaks, only to find that they're not giving off any milk, an the impending fate that the yaks aren't able to produce milk worries Mulch greatly.
Meanwhile, on the mountain side of Raven Point, Hiccup and Astrid are enjoying a fun morning of "dragon boarding" down the mountain side, partaking/flirting in playful jokes and gestures as they do so (although their jokes are more like playful attempts to potentially harm each other). Amidst their fun, though, they end up setting off an avalanche. Astrid and Stormfly are able to get away just fine, but Hiccup and Toothless are trapped in a flight path going downhill due to Toothless's prosthetic tail being frozen over and unable to open or close. And despite Hiccup's attempt to open the tail up himself, nothing works.
| Astrid to the rescue |
Astrid, worried, flies Stormfly back down to Hiccup and Toothless and tries to pull Hiccup up to safety, but it's too late and they both end up getting buried in snow within a trench.
Trapped at the bottom of the trench, Toothless and Stormfly try and melt the snow around them and Hiccup and Astrid are amazed that the dragons spread their wings out to shield them for the snow. As the two hold each other for warmth, Hiccup and Astrid realize how close they're seated together and awkwardly pull apart and proceed to break free.
Back on Berk at the barn, Gobber and Stoick have come to inspect why the yaks aren't giving any milk until Bucket's bucket starts to tighten, causing him extreme pain. Mulch informs Stoick and Gobber that every time Bucket's bucket tightens up on him, a storm is coming, and "the tighter the bucket, the bigger the storm". But, Gobber and Stoick aren't buying it, and they go to Gothi's house to get a second opinion.
Stoick and Gobber approach Gothi and she confirms that a storm is coming because she heard Bucket screaming all the way out her house.
Meanwhile, Astrid and Hiccup has returned to Berk, and are telling Fishlegs and Snotlout about their experience and how the dragons used their "protective instincts" to save them from being buried in snow and freezing to death. Fishlegs suggests that Hiccup and Astrid could've used their own bodies to stay warm and the two nervously deny it.
Shortly after Snotlout fails at yet another attempt to hit on Astrid, Tuffnut and Ruffnut call down Hiccup, saying that his father is looking for him.
At the Haddock house Stoick tells Hiccup of the severity of the problem that might not have enough provisions to get through the winter since the storm is hitting so early in the season, and to prove his point, Bucket and Mulch appear with an empty milking bucket.
Stoick tells Hiccup that it's his responsibility to make peace between the farm animals and the dragons. But as Bucket's bucket gets tighter Hiccup realizes that he only has a few days to do so.
At the academy arena/kill ring, Hiccup and the other teens are desperately trying to get the farm animals to make nice with the dragons, but the animals are still too scared to even go near them. Fishlegs suggests looking at the situation from "an animal's perspective" and tries to impersonate a sheep and crawls around on the floor, admitting that a dragons appearance from lower to the ground really is scary. Hiccup tries to get the sheep to have "a positive experience" with the dragons, but it only ends up with a sheep catching on fire again.
That same day, Stoick and Gobber are sealing up homes with wooden boards in preparation for the storm, discussing that with the inventory of food that they currently have, they won't survive the winter unless the animals start producing more eggs and milk. But Stoick has the upright confidence in his son.
In the academy arena, though, the animals are still running around, terrified of the dragons. Hiccup and Astrid then come up with another suggestion. Astrid tells the story of how she used to be afraid of a man called "Magnus the Merciless" until she found out that he was afraid of the dark, and knowing that he had fears made him less scary to her. Hiccup uses this idea to show the farm animals that dragons are afraid of things too, such as eels, and proceeds to show eels to the dragons. The dragons being scared of the eels seems to work for the farm animals for a hot minutes before the dragons become so scared that they fling a sheep across the arena. And by this point, Hiccup is beyond frustrated.
At Great Hall later that day the villagers are all going inside to prepare to stay in there until the storm blows over. Bucket's bucket is getting tighter by the moment and Stoick orders Gobber and Mulch to go get the teens and the farm animals out of the arena so they can be locked down with the others.
Back in the arena, Fishelegs has one more suggestion in showing the animals that they have something in common with the dragons by proving to the chickens that they both lay eggs, and presents them with a terrible terror's egg. But it only frightens the chickens more when it explodes.
Finally out of time, Gobber and Mulch appear, telling the teens that Stoick wants them all in the Great Hall, and on cue the snow begins to fall. Hiccup begs for more time, but it can't be granted because they can't risk the animals freezing as "you can't get eggs from a frozen chicken". Sadly, the barn has already frozen over and can't be accessed so they all have no choice but to herd the animals and dragons into the Great Hall, hoping they can all get along during the storm.
On the walk to the Great Hall, though, the dragons end up scaring the farm animals away, and the teens are unable to catch them all. Gobber claims that they'll never be able to find all of the runaway animals in the storm, but Hiccup hops on Toothless and goes after them anyways, taking it as his responsibility to accomplish the task given to him. The other teens, follow his lead.
Gobber goes back the Great Hall, informing Stoick that the teens have gone off after the missing animals, and Stoick and Gobber go out to find them even as the storm comes in heavier.
In the thick brush of the storm, the teens try and round of the rogue animals, but are finding little luck in getting them to keep still. Finally, Hiccup and Toothless find a bit of luck when Toothless saves a baby sheep from falling off a cliff.
Shortly after Stoick and Gobber are found by Ruffnut and Tuffnut and want to take the kids hom, only to find that the storm has blown away the tracks they made on the way there. Surrounded by snow and freezing, everyone huddles together for warmth and the dragons shield them with the wings just as Toothless and Stormfly did for Hiccup and Astrid.
Toothless soon takes the initiative and goes over to the sheep that he saved, pushing it over to the huddle in hopes that it'll trust him. And once the farm animals see that the sheep trusts Toothless, they all come into the huddle, being protected by the dragons wings as the storm comes down harder throughout the night.
The next morning, the storm is finally over, and the dragons were able to keep everyone safe throughout the night, Stoick smiles proudly at his son and soon everyone is able to herd the farm animals back to the Great Hall with the help of the dragons. Hiccup then announces that the chickens are laying eggs again.
And with the storm over and the dragons finally getting along with the farm animals, life gets "a little warmer" on Berk.
