Full Description: "In Dragons We Trust"

WARNING: This description contains heavy spoilers for the entire episode

The episode opens with Hiccup free falling gracefully over Berk, enjoying the sensation before Toothless swoops down and catches his rider, cutting it close to the water, though.

"Something tells me we're gonna hear about this..."
Hiccup rejoins the rest of the teens in their flight pattern, and encourages Fishlegs to be the next one to try free falling, but Fishlegs is hesitant even though Hiccup tells him it's simply a trust exercise with Meatlug. Fishlegs comments that he prefers his trust "on the ground". Cockily, though, Snotlout immediately free falls off of Hookfang, but Hookfang doesn't seem to notice the loss of his rider. Once Toothless reminds Hookfang that his rider is falling, Hookfang immediately dives in to catch Snotlout. Although Snotlout is resuced, their landing is too shaky and they end up crashing through Mildew's roof...twice!

Later that night, Stoick reprimands Hiccup about Snotlout's actions, telling his son that he has to keep a better lock on what the dragons do, since he's in charge what the dragons do reflect on Hiccup, and thus what Hiccup does reflects on Stoick. Hiccup is ordered to go and fix Mildew's roof soon, without the assistance of Toothless.

Boot Night
After the talk, Stoick reveals to Hiccup that it's "boot night"--a night once a week where the viking males put their boots outside the house that they've worn all week and air them out. And apparently, they smell horrible. While the boots are sitting out, though, a mysterious figure goes around to all the houses and steals every pair.

The next morning, after the boots are stolen and light snowfall, the Vikings awaken to find that all of their boots aren't where they're supposed to be, leaving them all barefoot and confused. But Mildew, who is also barefoot, points to the snow which is imprinted with Zippleback foot prints, and urges everyone to follow them. They lead to the Dragon Academy where a Zippleback is sleeping surrounded by a pile of chewed up boots.

Outraged that they can't work in the snowy weather without boots, the villagers becomes angry and wonder what Stoick's going to do about it--all fueled by Mildew's complaints, of course. Although Stoick feels like chewed up boots aren't the end of the world, Hiccup steps in and vows that he will keep the dragons under control, alongside noticing the distinct different in depth to the supposed Zippleback footprints leading into the academy and the footprints the Zippleback makes as it walks away.

Later that afternoon, Hiccup round up the gang and issues that they create a dragon night patrol to keep an eye on the dragons ant night and make sure they aren't blamed for anymore mischief. The patrolling group is called the "Dragon United Monitoring Brigade" but it's abbreviated as "DUMB" on the sashes that Astrid and Snotlout wear.

Astrid as a member of  DUMB
All seems to be going well that night until the un-watched Great Hall is suddenly hit with vandalism that night, but what appears to be the claw of a dragon that rips tapestry, and claws at tables and chairs. The next morning Stoick, Gobber, and the DUMB patrol inspect the vandalism of the Great Hall, completely confused on what could've gone wrong. And even with Hiccup's claims that a dragon - Hookfang to be exact - couldn't have done it because none of the food was even touched (something a dragon would've definitely gone after), Stoick still has to be reasonable.

With Mildew's nonstop complaints Stoick urges Hiccup to keep all the dragons in the Academy at night from now on so that they don't cause anymore damage, much to Hiccup's chagrin.

At dusk, Hiccup and the other teens proceed to fly their dragons over to the Academy for the night and Stoick watches sadly as Hiccup flies away. He knows that Hiccup thinks that when he's punishing the dragons, he's punishing him, but Stoick knows that he has to also do what's best the village as well as his son.

All the teens are distressed as they spend the rest of the day with their dragons in the academy, preparing them for sleep. Fishlegs urges Meatlug to sleep with their nighttime routine (which also includes him singing a song to her in addition to Meatlug licking his feet) but when she's too distraught to go through with it, he starts to blame Snotlout because Hookfang is the one who's believed to have vandalized the Great Hall.

Hookfang's "angry" footprint
Hiccup, though, still doesn't believe that a dragon is the one causing the misfortunes on Berk, despite what everyone says. He mentioned the Zippleback footprints again and notes that while the footprints made leading the the Academy the previous day were shaped like a Zippleback they were much to shallow to be made by an actual dragon. Despite this evidence, Ruffnut just suggests that perhaps the dragon was trying to be sneaky and thus made shallow footprints. Only when Hookfang, Barf and Belch begin fighting and Hookfang catches on fire because "he always does that when he's angry" does Hiccup figure out a good defense against the Great Hall vandalism.

With Toothless sleeping outside Hiccup enters the Great Hall (which is being cleaned up by the villagers) and tries to convince his father that if a real Monstrous Nightmare had vandalized the Great Hall out of anger there would've been scorch marks all over the place...yet there are none. But Stoick can't believe his plea until he has "solid proof" and claims that the dragons are still to sleep in the academy at nights.

Armory fire
Meanwhile, outside where Toothless is sleeping, he hears a suspicious noise in the distance and follows it into the armory shed, sniffing around only to find that there's been a bomb planted inside the armory that's about to go off. Escaping just in time, Toothless is safe from this scheme but to the Viking man watching from the distance it appears as if Toothless set the armory on fire himself. And as the villagers rush to save the armory, the man exclaims that Toothless was the one who did it, much to Hiccup's shock.

After the fire is put out, it's merely a pile of ashes and unusable weapons, thus leaving the village with no weapons to defend themselves if there to be an attack from foreigners or enemy tribes. It's then when Stoick finally gives into the complaints of the villagers and Mildew and asks Hiccup to take all the dragons to Dragon Island until further notice. To Mildew's happiness it reminds Hiccup of why he shouldn't leave his dragon "all alone to wait outside", and Hiccup can't shake what the old man says out of his mind.

Still, Hiccup knows that something doesn't add up, but knows that there's not much he can do at that point, and prepares himself to take the dragons away the next day.

Goodbye hug
The next day, they teens fly their dragons to the island alongside a boat to the Dragon Island, all saying heartfelt good byes to the dragon companions, knowing they won't be apart forever. Hiccup promises Toothless that he'll be back and tells Toothless that he needs to "look after the other dragons" before giving Toothless one last hug and leaving.

All the teens stand somberly on the boat ride back home. Hiccup is deep in thought and turns to Astrid to confide in about what Mildew said to him, realizing that Mildew shouldn't have known Toothless was waiting outside right before the armory fire unless he had did it. Astrid is a bit hesitant in believing that Mildew really did all the crimes, but eventually does, and asks how he's going to prove it.

Later that same day, Hiccup is finally fixing Mildew's roof and besides - since he's alone - to go snooping around in Mildew's house via climbing down a rope through the hole in his roof. He looks around to find, oddly enough, pictures of all three of his ex-wives on his wall as well as a picture of his sheep Fungus.

Mildew with the evidence
Behind a curtain, Hiccup finally finds what he's looking for....boots modeled to look exactly like Zippleback feet as well as a fake Monstrous Nightmare claw. But, Hiccup is unable to do anything with this evidence when Mildew is approaching the door and he quickly has to climb the rope back up...keeping himself suspended above Mildew's head and out of sight while Mildew "greets" the pictures of his dead ex-wives.

Mildew, still not seeing Hiccup, then takes the dragon feet and claw and says that they "served him well" and proceeds to go to the edge of the cliffside while a still unseen Hiccup watches from the roof.

With only Hiccup as an audience, Mildew throws the dragon feet and claw over the cliff and into the ocean. Hiccup watches in anger, finally knowing Mildew was the one who framed the dragons but also knowing that he now has no proof.

New Information:

  • Fishlegs seems, ironically, afraid of heights even though he flies his dragon, not wanting to participate in the trust exercise of jumping off one's dragon.
  • The Vikings have a weekly tradition called "Boot Night" where the male heads of the home put their week old boots outside to "air out", a task usually performed by the children of the house.
  • Mildew has fashioned dragon feet to look like a Zippleback's feet as well as a fake claw that resembles a Monstrous Nightmare's, which implies he might be as good with making things/inventing as Hiccup is.
  • Mildew was married three times and all of his wives died. It's hinted that he might have intentionally murdered them all due to him being so happy about their funerals. He also has pictures of all three of his wives on his wall that he rudely talks to...as well as a picture of his sheep: Fungus.
  • The Great Hall also hosts weddings.
  • D.U.M.B was established and enforced only for one night and has not been reestablished ever since.
  • Still, of all the Viking Teens, Hiccup seems to only confide in Astrid.
  • Fun fact: this was the first episode to end with a cliffhanger and therefore no closing narration.
