Full Description: "Alvin and the Outcasts"

WARNING: This description contains heavy spoilers for the entire episode.

We open with Dragon Island.  The dragons lay about the rocks, forlorn and missing their riders.  Isolation and irritation has become too much for some of them; Hookfang, Barf and Belch begin to snap at one another, which Toothless is quick to break up.  But his tough demeanor quickly falls as he gives his saddle a pitiful nudge.  He stares out across the sea to where his knows Berk is.

Teens on Thor's Beach looking for evidence
Meanwhile, miles away on Berk, Hiccup also stares across the sea, facing Dragon Island.  He’s determined to get the dragons back and prove their innocence in Mildew’s schemes. The Teens have been moseying around the beach for the last ten minutes, looking for evidence of Mildew’s guilt.  But instead of doing anything productive, Snotlout has built Snotlout Manor. Tuffnut destroys it as he pretends to “storm the castle”.

Hiccup is frustrated by their lack of focus.  He insists that he saw the dragon-feet Mildew used to frame their dragons thrown into the ocean.  Fishlegs points out how unlikely it is they’ll find the evidence.  Astrid also gives similar advice, though it is delivered in a far gentler manner. Hiccup’s wavering hopes are lifted by Snotlout’s sudden shout of discovery, but it turns out to be a small club that Snotlout owned as a child.  Dejected, but determined, Hiccup instructs everyone to keep looking.

In the forge, Gobber beats the final touches into an axe against an anvil.  It’s the first of the three hundred and forty six weapons he needs to replace.  Stoick is with him; he’s anxious about being defenseless and urges Gobber to speed up.  Gobber points out that they wouldn’t be defenseless if they still had the dragons on the island.  They argue the pros and cons of banishing the dragons, in which Alvin the Treacherous is brought into the conversation—a rogue who would take advantage of their vulnerable state in a heartbeat.

Outcast Lands
Across the Northern seas, standing on an outcrop of Outcast Island, is Alvin the Treacherous. Fires ravage the land as a seemingly endless string of dragons attack his village. Vikings call for his help as a new wave of dragons charge them and he throws his men aside, being twice their size, single-handedly rights an overturned catapult, and shoots down a Monstrous Nightmare. He and his men retreat into their Great Hall and leave their land to the mercy of the dragons. They circle around a table to overlook a map. Alvin speaks of their plans to infiltrate Berk during the night, not for an invasion but to stealthily find and capture the fabled "Dragon Conqueror". With the Dragon Conqueror on their side, their current dragon predicament will be a thing of the past.

Back on Berk, Hiccup continues to argue Mildew’s guilt to his father and Gobber. Stoick is willing to listen, but without any evidence Hiccup can’t continue to accuse Mildew of "high treason".  It’s not long before Hiccup is walking along the cliffs of Berk with Astrid at his side.  He lends his assurance that they will find proof to use against Mildew but Astrid’s attention is diverted from him when she spots a ship anchored out by some sea stacks, far from Hooligan Harbor.  Hiccup whips out his spyglass to focus on the ship and immediately realizes it’s not a Hooligan ship.  He and Astrid rush off to warn Stoick.

Hiccup and Astrid spot the Outcast's ship
Night falls and the Alvin’s ship pulls onto Berk’s beach as planned.  He and his hand-picked crew set out to find the Dragon Conqueror.

Berk’s residents are gathered in the Great Hall. The news of the Outcast invasion has spread and tensions are high. Stoick starts to calm the villagers just as Sven runs into the hall, reporting to have seen at least thirty Outcasts all "armed to the teeth".  Gobber points out that their own lack of weaponry means they can’t fight the Outcasts head-on and Mildew takes this opportunity to point out that the dragons have left them defenseless, much to Hiccup’s annoyance.

Stoick assigns Mulch and Bucket the task of taking the elders and children to Thor’s Beach to find shelter in the caves and Astrid wants to help defend Berk with her warrior training, as does Snotlout, but Stoick sends them off after the rest. He does, though, give Astrid Alvin’s old hatchet and tells her to protect the others.  Hiccup volunteers to get the dragons from Dragon Island so that they can have some line of defense, and Stoick, not wanting to take any more risks, gives him permission but tells his son to be careful. Stoick and the rest of the able-bodied Hooligans head off into the forest to ambush the Outcasts.

Fishlegs sits on a precipice overhanging the North Sea and recites sorrowful poetry about his feelings for Meatlug. He misses her. But he is  soon interrupted by Alvin who lifts Fishlegs by the front of his shirt and demands the identity of the Dragon Conqueror. Terrified, Fishlegs can only scream and an annoyed Alvin throws him off the cliff and into the water.

Hiccup arrives at Hooligan Harbor with the hopes of hoping on a ship to make it to Dragon Island, but immediately sees an Outcast ship pull into a dock. He tries to run through the Village Square but Outcasts are approaching from all directions.  As a last resort, he slides the porch of a house before any can spot him.  But he’s not alone; Fishlegs also sought refuge under the house and he shakily informs Hiccup that Alvin is looking for him.
Alvin giving orders to the Outcasts

Alvin hasn’t found Hiccup yet, but as he walks through the ruins of the armory he is pleased to see how ill prepared Stoick is for their arrival.  His good spirits fall when he comes to Stoick’s home to find it as empty as the rest of the village.  He receives a report of Hooligans being spotted in the forest and on the beach.  Alvin splits up his group; he sends half of his men to the forest while his group heads to the beach. He plans on using hostages to lure out the Dragon Conqueror.

Meanwhile, Hiccup sends Fishlegs off to the forest to warn his father while he plans to warn Mulch and the others.

Over in the forest, Berk’s finest are planning their attack using the best weapons they can find.  Unfortunately, their best weapons are little more than kitchen utensils.  Though, Gobber proves the deadliness of such weapons by showing off some knife tricks.

The beach side of things is not faring much better.  Just as the line of children and elders near the caves, Mulch looks back and realizes Bucket is missing.  A little girl claims he went back to get her ‘Lambie’.  Annoyed, Mulch turns back to fetch Bucket.  He quickly finds friend, who has successfully retrieved Lambie.  Before they can rejoin the group, Alvin and his unit ambush them.  Unknown to any of the party, Hiccup, who had been in search of Mulch’s group, watches from behind a tree.

Back in the forest, Gobber runs from three pursuing Outcasts who stumbled upon him.  His chase leads him through the thick brush and ends in a dead end. The Outcasts close in on the apparently trapped Hooligan; only Gobber’s overacting gives hint to deception. Just as they move in for the kill Stoick and the other Vikings jump in for an ambush.  They make quick work of the unsuspecting Outcasts.   Before they can relax, a crunch of twigs sounds from the forest.  The Hooligans are back on high alert.  In sharp tones, Stoick directs his subordinates to branch out before he follows the noise.  He spies a figure moving through the foliage and he immediately gives chase.  At the first opportunity, Stoick dives and successfully tackles his target.   Before he can lay waste to what he thought was an Outcast, the body pinned beneath him pleads for mercy.  It’s Fishlegs, sent by Hiccup.  As soon as he catches his breath from the scare, Fishlegs hastily informs Stoick that Alvin has come to Berk for Hiccup.

"Who's the Dragon Conqueror? Tell me!"
On the other side of the island, Alvin has successfully rounded up a substantial number of hostages.  Among them are Hiccup’s friends.  When Alvin announces his intention of seeking the Dragon Conqueror, Mildew is ready to sell Hiccup out.  Luckily, a quick elbow to the face—courtesy of Astrid—halts his betrayal.  The movement catches Alvin’s attention but Astrid explains Mildew’s unconscious state as being nothing more than a much needed nap.

Snotlout is the first to take a stand against Alvin.  He makes a silent charge at Alvin’s back with the club he found on the beach earlier that day, but he chickens out as soon as Alvin faces him.  He instead turns his attack into an offering, much to the twins’ exasperation.  Astrid moves next and hurls the hatchet Stoick gave her at Alvin’s back.  He catches it without looking.  His delight at recovering his old hatchet is short lived in light of the girl who attacked him.  Astrid has made herself a target.  Alvin circles her, delivering taunts, and gives her braid a harsh yank as he demands the identity of the Dragon Conqueror again.

Hiccup, who has been tailing Alvin and can’t stand to see Astrid captive like this, chooses to announce his presence. He reveals himself as the Dragon Conqueror, withstanding the expected derisive laughter.  Astrid is horrified that he’s put himself in danger like this, but after catching a meaningful look from him she is quick to play along.  Hiccup convinces Alvin that the only way to prove he is indeed the Dragon Conqueror is to take him to Dragon Island.

Alvin finally meets the "Dragon Conqueror"
Alvin picks a handful of his crew to accompany him and Hiccup to Dragon Island, leaving the rest of his crew on Berk to stand guard over the hostages.   Under the cover of darkness, one by one Stoick and the other Vikings pick them off.  Stoick demands Hiccup’s location out of one of the Outcasts, who proves unwilling to cooperate.  Just as he is ready to crush the Viking’s skull, Astrid hurriedly informs him of the whereabouts of his son.

Dawn breaks by the time Dragon Island is in view of Alvin’s ship.  Against the impressive intimidation of Alvin the Treacherous and with steel at his neck, Hiccup maintains an admirable calmness.   Stoick follows not too far behind.  He’s armed with catapults and the teens of Berk.  The plan is to give the teens coverfire until they can safely mount their dragons again.

Alvin’s ship makes it to Dragon Island.  He pushes Hiccup ahead at sword point.  The Outcasts are weary, looking for any sign of hostile dragons, while Hiccup looks on in hope.  Predictably, Toothless is the first dragon to pop into view.  He approaches his rider, heedless that the Outcasts’ weapons are now pointed at him. Hiccup hastily convinces them to lower their weapons and simply watch under the guise of giving conquering instructions.  Toothless’s enthusiasm for being reunited with Hiccup is taken as hostility by the Outcasts, which only serves to make Hiccup more impressive for withstanding the Night Fury’s attention.  Hiccup maneuvers Toothless while shouting phony words of bravado; he uses their body positioning to quickly saddle the Night Fury.  By the time Alvin realizes something is amiss, Hiccup is already mounted.  He faces them atop his dragon and proudly proclaims himself a Dragon Trainer.

"Welcome aboard, Astrid"
They take to the skies, just narrowly missing a sword swipe from Alvin.  Alvin has no choice but to accept Hiccup is, in fact, the ‘Dragon Conqueror’ he sought. The Outcasts are in shock by what they just witnessed, but under Alvin’s bellowed instructions they begin firing at the airborne pair.  Toothless and Hiccup maneuver around catapulted boulders and a flurry of arrows with some difficulty.  Astrid and Stormfly save them from a close call.  A quick scope of his surroundings shows Hiccup that his father’s ship has arrived and his friends are on their dragons.  Stoick orders the Vikings to fire at Alvin’s catapults so the dragons can get close enough to use their flames on the Outcasts. Realizing he’s a sitting duck with his ship still stationary on shore, Alvin orders his men to push off.  Hiccup and the teens try to take advantage of the brief distraction, but their proximity to the few working catapults results in Astrid being thrown from Stormfly’s back.  She lands roughly on Alvin’s ship.  Hiccup sees this, but before he can rescue her Alvin grabs Astrid.

Under Stoick and Hiccup’s orders, the dragons fire into the water.  Steam billows up around the Outcast ship, obscuring their vision.  They can hear the dragons circling their ship, catch glimpses of wings through the thick air, and blindly fire into the mist.  Stoick uses their distraction to ram his ship into Alvin’s.  The Outcasts are thrown from their feet. Astrid escapes from Alvin’s clutches and whacks him for good measure with an oar. She runs, jumps from the ship, and is caught by Toothless to be flown to safety.

Stoick and Alvin: Rivals
Alvin can do little more than sneer at the turn of events before Stoick is upon him with a dead-on strike to the face.  The two men duke it out, trading blows of equal strength.  Alvin is the first to break the unspoken rules of their fight; he catches Stoick with an anchor to the face and continues to attack him with the weapon until it gets caught in the figurehead of the ship.  Stoick is quick to bind Alvin’s hand with the very anchor rope that was once used against him.  It’s just in time for the bowsprit to crack and the figurehead to plunge into the water, the anchor still imbedded. Alvin is pulled overboard.

Stoick pushes his ship off of the Outcast’s and hops aboard while giving the go-ahead for Hiccup to attack.  The teens take turns firing at the Outcast ship and soon the entire vessel is ablaze.  The Hooligans leave Dragon Island together with the burning ship sinking in their wake.  Alvin and his crew are left to swim to Dragon Island’s shore, now without a ship.  Much to his crew’s confusion, Alvin begins laughing.  He’s only encouraged by the revelation that dragons can be ridden, and once he gets his hands on Hiccup, they’ll all be able to ride dragons.
"You hear that, bud? You're back home!"

The Hooligans return to Berk and are greeted with enthusiasm and applause.  The villagers of Berk are delighted to have their warriors and dragons back.  Mildew tries to bring up a cantankerous argument for their return but is quickly shot down by Stoick, who reminds him of how the dragons saved their lives.  Hiccup follows up with a vow that he’ll never forget what Mildew did, despite being unable to prove it.  The dragons have once again proven they are not only safe for Berk, but will also actively protect it.

New Information:
  • The Hooligan Tribe does have a rival tribe: The Outcasts
  • Alvin and Stoick apparently have a long history of being at odds with each other
  • Fishlegs likes to recite poetry
  • Mildew detests Hiccup so much that he is willing to sell him out to their enemies
  • Mildew was never proven, blamed, or punished for his crimes against the dragons due to the, still, lack of proof.
  • Alvin took something of Stoick's, though it's not clear as to what.
  • Hiccup's ending the war between Dragons and Vikings on Berk has apparently spread to other islands, though the true details have been misplaced. Hiccup is rumored to be the "Dragon Conqueror" that's 10 feet tall with the strength of a dozen men, and drove the dragons away from the island of his own will power.
  • Although dragons and Vikings get along on Berk, that is not the case for other dragons outside Berk. Such as on the Outcast's lands, they are still warring against the dragons.
  • Fun Fact: Ruffnut did not speak this entire episode, and is the only character so far to have not said a word an entire episode.
