Gobber the Belch

Stoick’s good friend and Hiccup’s blacksmith/dragon training mentor/dragon dentist. He lives on the Isle of Berk.

Role in the Franchise:
Gobber is the veteran of Berk. He’s missing his left hand, his right leg, and a tooth, but that’s not going to stop Gobber from enjoying what life has to offer.
In the movie, Gobber is the dragon training teacher to the new recruits, and is quite knowledgeable about dragon statistics (this might have something to do with that fact that Gobber’s great-great-great-grandfather was Bork the Bold, the Viking who wrote the infamous “Book of Dragons”). This knowledge of dragons helps Gobber adjust much better to the cohabitation with dragons after the events of the movie.

Post-movie, one of the biggest adjustments Gobber had to make was abandoning his dragon weaponry making to be a dragon dentist/doctor in the Riders of Berk episode Viking for Hire. Although he does not make weapons to kill dragons anymore, he still keeps his blacksmith business open to make weapons of defense against invaders, especially when the Outcasts resurface as a threat.

Even though Hiccup and Stoick's relationship is on better terms after the movie, both Hiccup and Stoick still require and asks for advice from Gobber when they're having their unavoidable differences.

Personality:
Gobber seems to be naturally sarcastic, but he’s also surprisingly good at giving advice and has seemed to become a go-between to Stoick and Hiccup when they can’t communicate with each other. He isn't seen giving anyone else advice though, because most see him to be more crazy than helpful.
That being said, Gobber tends to be a little more on the wacky side than his friend Stoick, for he readily believes many insane theories (like how he thinks trolls exist and that they steal your socks), takes the teens on adventures, and actively gets into his own dangers as well. Gobber’s obsession with thinking the Boneknapper dragon is after him inspires him to go off and find it to “put an end to this”—taking the teens with him—but finds that the Boneknapper just wanted the bone that Gobber took from him back in the post-movie short Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon.

Although Gobber doesn’t have a dragon of his own yet (though his dragon may be the Boneknapper, it isn’t confirmed) he does have a sheep named Phil that was introduced in Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon.

Ironically in Riders of Berk episode Viking for Hire Gobber seems to be good at giving advice to Stoick and Hiccup, but bad at actually showing leadership such as Stoick when dealing with everyone else's problems. Gobber's nature to build weapons makes him an ill fit to really make anything for them (such as saddles), but Gobber's knowledge of dragons ins and outs makes him the perfect dragon doctor. Gobber's also seen to have a soft side as well, as he was crying in Viking for Hire because he felt he didn't fit in anywhere anymore.

Abilities:

Gobber is a skilled blacksmith and he fashions many attachments for his missing hand (See Gobber's Hand Attachments for more). Gobber is seemingly the one who taught Hiccup everything he knows, and although he did fight when needed in the dragon raids of the first movie, Gobber was mostly seen in his blacksmith shop, making quick repairs on and providing weapons for the people in battle.

In the Riders of Berk episode Alvin and the Outcasts Gobber shows that he's a capable enough and accurate fighter that he can split a tree with just the toss of a small knife.

Appearance:

Gobber is practically just as tall as Stoick (making him near 7 feet tall). He isn’t seen to have any hair under the horned Viking helmet he wears, but his beard is blonde, and he has blue eyes. Gobber is always seen wearing a brown, stained tunic, stripped pants, fur boots, wrapped wrist bands, and a short, brown fur vest. He is missing his right leg which is replaces with a wooden peg leg. His missing left hand is replaced with a variety of custom re-attachable hand prosthetics (see Gobber's Hand Attachments for more) and his missing tooth is filled in with a stone (which occasionally falls out). Although Gobber never complains about his missing limbs, he is seen having trouble walking multiple times.

In Riders of Berk Gobber's fur vest is replaced with a leather one that has various designs on it.

Relationships:
Stoick/Gobber (friendship)
