Astrid's Relationships

Friends:

Astrid's Deadly Nadder as of the post-movie short Gift of the Night Fury. Astrid first chose Stormfly when she flew her in the battle against the Green Death, and even though she was knocked off Stormfly during the battle, she was seen to still be flying her at the end of the first film alongside Hiccup and Toothless.

In Gift of the Night Fury Astrid and Stormfly are seen to be very close to one another, and Astrid was saddened when Stormfly flew to the Rookery with the other dragons, as she hoped they could spend Snoggletog together. When Stormfly returned, Astrid was joyful, hugging her warmly. It's assumed that Astrid will also help out in caring for Stormfly's three babies.

In Riders of Berk Astrid and Stormfly's flying is second best (behind Hiccup, of course), due to her heavy training with her. Stormfly always greets Astrid in the morning as the first thing she sees. Stormfly and Astrid seem to be able to understand each other through command-like words and nudges.

Their abilities also allow for Astrid to not only be able to ride Stormfly standing up, but be able to perform acrobatic stunts while flying as well, as exhibited in the episode Thawfest.

In the episode Heather Report, Part 1 Astrid starts experimenting with what Stormfly eats to ensure maximum speed and finds that feeding Stormfly chicken which helps her catch up significantly to Toothless's speed. But it seems that Stormfly is a little less loyal than the other dragons in terms of only letting Astrid ride her, though this can be justified by the fact that Astrid and Stormfly's relationship seems more business than pleasure.

When Astrid first found out about Toothless and Hiccup she immediately cast them both off and probably had every intention of killing Toothless is she had gotten the chance. Her abhor towards him was short lived, though, for she was quickly proven wrong after she took a flight with Toothless and Hiccup. It seemed that the two were able to tolerate each other for the remainder of the movie as Astrid was the one who encouraged Hiccup to go off and rescue Toothless so Toothless wouldn't be scared and alone.

During the post movie short Gift of the Night Fury Astrid seemed to understand Hiccup's close bond with Toothless and encouraged it. When Toothless returned during the Snoggletog feast Astrid walked up and hugged Toothless and Toothless seemed happy to see her as well.

In Riders of Berk Toothless and Astrid seem to be the friendliest between non-riders and dragons pairs, probably due to her close relationship with Hiccup. She is the only other rider that seems to be close to Hiccup and on certain occasions is seem petting and comforting him such as in the episode Dragon Flower.

Due to Hiccup and Fishlegs's new found friendship, Astrid has seemed to spark a familiarity with him.

Similarly to Hiccup and Fishlegs, Astrid seems to prefer Fishlegs's company over Ruffnut, Tuffnut, or Snotlout's probably because they can connect more on an intellectual level. In theory, though, Astrid seems to treat Fishlegs more like a younger sibling, chastising his wistful bouts of fear, impulse, or even jest as displayed in Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man and Heather Report, Part 2.

Also, in Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man it's proven that although Astrid is usually helping out Fishlegs, he can help her out as well. In the absence of Hiccup--when he and Toothless fell in a ditch in the midst of falling rocks--Fishlegs is capable of calming Astrid down emotionally despite her want to stay behind in a dangerous situation just to find them.

In later episodes of Riders of Berk Astrid is shown to become more and more protective and close to Fishlegs. Though she has no problem beating up Fishlegs when she sees fit--usually in a fond manner or more sibling-like roughtness--she steps in between anyone (usually Snotlout) who wants to hurt him and consoles him when necessary.

Love Interests:

Astrid and Hiccup's relationship started off on a rocky foundation mostly of Astrid's accord. She, simply put, wanted nothing to do with him. Astrid thought of Hiccup to be a nuisance to Dragon Training and although she didn't make fun of him like the other Viking teens did, she didn't bother hiding the fact that she was constantly displeased with his presence and had no problem calling him out on all of his shortcomings whenever she felt necessary.

Astrid's cold shoulder towards Hiccup seemed to have more to it, though, as she would constantly stare at him throughout most of the movie, though this fact alone can go many different ways as to what was the motivation behind the staring was.

Astrid's ignoring of Hiccup was put to a halt when he suddenly became better than her in Dragon Training, and from then on, Hiccup was the center of Astrid's suspicions. She would constantly become angry whenever he would outshine her in training and began to become more obsessed with being the best and finding out what exactly he was hiding, because not for a moment did Astrid believe he was really that good.  Her animosity and suspicions towards him only grew until she followed Hiccup into the Cove to demand answers after he bested her and was granted the opportunity to kill the Monstrous Nightmare in front of the whole village over her.

At first glance, when Astrid first saw Hiccup and Toothless together, Astrid immediately cast him off and ran off to expose his secret, and if it wasn't for Hicccup "capturing" her and forcing her onto Toothless for a ride she would've. After the first terrifying few minutes of her first flight on Toothless, Astrid immediately softened and enjoyed the scenery as well as got caught up in the moment and wrapped her arms around Hiccup, only increasing their proximity. From that moment on, Astrid had no problem with being close (in the physical sense) to Hiccup for the rest of the ride she clung to Hiccup fiercely for comfort and support, when physical contact was something Astrid hated in the few moments beforehand, when they were forced into close contact.

Astrid was still ready, once they returned, to go and tell the location of the Dragon's Nest, but agreed to keep it a secret when she saw the true extent of Hiccup's loyalty to Toothless. She apparently was charmed and impressed by Hiccup's admiral admission and, after she punched him on the arm for "kidnapping her", kissed him on the cheek for "everything else" before awkwardly running off.

The next day, Astrid comforted Hiccup and showed concern when he expressed that his fight against the Nightmare might "go wrong", and she asked him to promise her it wouldn't go wrong and also willingly agreed to take care of Toothless in the worst case scenario. When the Monstrous Nightmare ended up attacking and chasing Hiccup around the Kill Ring, Astrid was the first to enter and try and help him by the luring the dragon towards her and away from him. When the Viking's overpowered Toothless, Astrid also held Hiccup back from the fray in fear that he might've gotten hurt trying to stop the madness.

Later on, it was Astrid who was able to get Hiccup to come to terms with his choice of not killing Toothless and convinced him to go and rescue him. While flying towards the Green Death, Astrid and Hiccup chose to fly together, even though they could have easily picked other flying arrangements.

When Hiccup was believe to be dead after the battle, Astrid showed her softer side, and was noticeably overwhelmed with sadness over the fact that he was assumed to be dead. She also showed relieved joy when it was proven that Hiccup had survived. After Hiccup woke up, Astrid regarded Hiccup with a punch on the shoulder for "scaring her" and then with an "intense" (as Hiccup described in the novelization of the movie) first kiss on the lips.

Although Astrid and Hiccup seem in friendly company during the post-movie short Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon, it wasn't until Gift of the Night Fury  where it was evident that Astrid was--more or less--romantically involved with Hiccup.

In Gift of the Night Fury, Astrid and Hiccup are seen to be close and good friends, and she seemed to spend most of her time with him as opposed to the other Viking teens. She was also noticeably less violent towards him and instead replaced her previous aggression for kinder words and gestures, such as when she said he was "amazing" before she left Gobber's blacksmith forge after giving Hiccup some of her Yaknog.
Astrid once again comforted Hiccup at the end of the short when she saw that he was saddened and missing Toothless. She told him that he did a "wonderful thing" for bringing everyone's dragons back and thanked him before giving him a short kiss on the lips and a long hug. Before Astrid decided to reveal that Toothless had come back, Astrid seemed to enjoy playfully teasing Hiccup, even though he didn't find it that funny. She also understood Hiccup's close bond with Toothless. Astrid is still the only who has initiated the physically romantic aspects of her relationship with Hiccup onscreen.

It's assumed that Hiccup and Astrid are taking their friendship relationship slow, but they still have a friendly and supportive relationship nonetheless. Thier closeness has even seemed to trigger a familiarity between their dragons.

In Riders of Berk Astrid and Hiccup seem to continue to become closer confidants, and Astrid is said to be Hiccup's main supporter as well as being second in command to dragon training related matters. They also seem to enjoy flying their dragon together. Astrid does seem to be annoyed by Hiccup's constant nature to break the rules, but she does always go along with his plans nonetheless--but chastises him later. It's obvious she worries about him more than any of the other other teens, and frequently checks up on him as well as comforts him whenever he's feeling down.

Still, despite the fact that Astrid exhibits romantic interest in Hiccup, they're both at a crossroads on what to do about it and ultimately they just end up acting awkward around each other. Astrid's relationship with Hiccup does seem to be one of the few things Astrid openly exhibits nervousness and/or awkwardness about, for it's something she doesn't know how to handle. It seems that she does enjoy being Hiccup's confidant and supporter and actively looks for chances to exhibit the fact that she's there for him when he needs someone to confide to as shown at the end of In Dragons We Trust.

And in Alvin and the Outcasts Astrid is seen to punch Mildew out cold because he was going to turn Hiccup in to Alvin. Although punching isn't an unusual action for Astrid, she did do it simply to protect Hiccup, as well as not telling Alvin Hiccup's whereabouts or status as "Dragon Conqueror" even though it was obvious he was going to hurt her.

In Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man Astrid showed more of her emotionally vulnerable side when Hiccup was in a life threatening situation after her fell in a ditch under falling boulders while on their treasure hunt. Despite the fact that even she was in danger of being crushed by the falling boulders, Astrid was ready and willing to stay behind even though she couldn't do anything to help Hiccup at that point. If it wasn't for Fishlegs calming her down she would've gotten herself killed as well.

Her relationship with Hiccup takes a bad turn, though, in the episode Heather Report, Part 1 in which Hiccup begins to blow off and not trust Astrid anymore due to the arrival of a new girl, Heather. Astrid becomes extremely hurt, jealous, and angry with Hiccup for trusting a stranger over her and even when he tries to apologize for his actions at the end of the episode, Astrid wasn't too interested in hearing it from him after her many failed attempts practically begging him to believe her beforehand. But, in Heather Report, part 2 Hiccup and Astrid are able to make peace, and Astrid seemed pleased with the fact that Hiccup was worried for her safety hen she went off on a dangerous mission to Outcast Island alone.

In Thawfest Astrid was disappointed in Hiccup's overly competitive ways and how he was just as bad as Snotlout in the urge to put down his competition. She confessed to him that one of the things she always liked about him was that he was a "gracious loser" and that she was off put by the fact that he was becoming a "lousy winner". In the end, when Hiccup threw the race in order to let Snotlout win, Astrid rewarded him with a kiss on the lips (their third in the franchise) as she admired that he was being the "better Viking".

In later episodes of Riders of Berk Astrid seems to be warming more up to Hiccup and vice versa. There's hardly any awkwardness when they are in close proximity and overall Astrid has taken to protecting and caring for Hiccup as almost second nature, as shown in Breakneck Bog where she convinced the other's to stay and help Hiccup search for his mother's gift.

Although it was obvious from day one that Astrid had no romantic feelings for Snotlout, it's very evident that Snotlout had eyes for Astrid and had little shame in letting her known this whenever possible. Snotlout's "all bark and no bite" attitude mostly got on Astrid's nerves, and she constantly either turned him down or completely ignored his passes towards her, especially after she gets involved with Hiccup.

Even in Riders of Berk Snotlout continues to make sly passes on Astrid, but they're all received generally the same as in the movie...they get him no where.

Astrid is also turned off by Snotlout's nature to brag and put down others as he did in Thawfest. This is a trait that will repel in from anyone, though, as she didn't like it when Hiccup started acting the same way either.

Enemies:

Almost from the moment Heather was found shipwrecked on Thor's Beach Astrid was suspicious of Heather's arrival, and it didn't help that Hiccup instantly developed a crush on Heather, causing Astrid's first wave of jealousy.

Soon, though, Astrid's initial jealousy over new romantic competition turned into suspicion when she figured Heather was after the Book of Dragons--as she was--and when Heather befriended Stormfly as well.

Despite no one believing her warnings until After Heather disappeared after stealing Stormfly with the Book of Draogn in tow, Astrid is able to "defeat" Heather and get Stormfly back, though the Book of Dragons is taken by Alvin as well as her relationship with Hiccup left on thin ice.

After Heather was proven to be a traitor, Astrid and the other riders were all finally on the same page in Heather Report, Part 2 and they had Heather thrown in jail, not believing her as she tried to tell them that Alvin actually had her parents held captive. At the end of the episode, though, when Heather came to their rescue and it was revealed that she was telling the truth about her parents, Astrid went to great risks to get Heather's parents to safety and it's assumed that her and Heather are at a friendly impasse.

So this enemy has turned into an ally.
