WARNING: This description contains heavy spoilers for the entire episode
The episode opens with the teens flying through Raven Point Forest; practicing "low level evasive maneuvers".
Snotlout becomes terrified when Hookfang decides to not listen to him once again, and flies wildly through the trees, hitting Snotlout with many branches and twigs. Meanwhile, Astrid and Stormfly come across an obstacle as well when they're about to collide with some trees. Although Astrid's first instinct is to go up Stormfly propels her into the air and goes underneath a opening in the trees and catches her rider just in time.
Hiccup soon wonders where Fishlegs has gone as he disappeared once they got into the forest, and goes off to look for him. Fishlegs is apparently stuck between two trees as a result of he and Meatlug crashing and Hiccup offers to get him down--accidently pulling down his pants in the process. He's able to get him out, though, when Toothless blasts his backside and sends him out from between the trees, and Meatlug falls out of the tree she's stuck in afterwards.
When Hiccup asks Fishlegs what caused the crash, Fishlegs embarrassingly replies that they saw a "flaming squirrel" in the forest and it scared them. Hiccup doesn't believe him until he too is knocked down by this "flaming squirrel", which turns out to be a new species of dragon that's hiding. Hiccup beckons the dragon to him even though Toothless seems put off by the new dragon, but Hiccup decides to take the little dragon back to Berk anyways when he finds out he's hurt.
Back at the training arena, the teens try and wonder what the new dragon is and who will take him home, and they all silently nominate Hiccup to do so. But, once at home, Stoick refuses to have another dragon in the home, saying that he has a "one dragon limit". Only when the new dragon ignites the fire pit before and just as good as Toothless Stoick gives the little dragon the name "Torch" and agrees that he can stay there, figuring that he can't throw him out now that he's named him....much to Toothless's dismay.
That night, for dinner, Hiccup gives Toothless his usual basket of fish and Torch one fish. But Torch eats his fish and all of Toothless's when Hiccup's not looking, causing him to think Toothless was "really hungry". Then, before bed, Torch tries to "share" Toothless's bed but Toothless refuses to have the little dragon in his bed and chooses to sleep on the rafters of the room, and gesture Hiccup doesn't understand.
That same night In the forest, Torch's mother goes to find her baby where she left him only to find that he's not there. Enraged, the mother begins to set the area around her on fire, the light can be seen all the way back at the Haddock house. Toothless is awakened by a loud noise outside and looks at Torch, seeming to know what's going on and hops outside the window to get a closer look, knowing very well that Torch's mother is looking for her son, and is not happy.
The next day, Hiccup and the teens gather in the training arena yet again to classify and name Torch's species as well as test his skills. After measuring it's wings, and testing it's claw strength, Fishlegs administrates the "eel reaction test" only to find that Torch actually eats the eel! Everyone is astonished since every other dragn they've encountered as been terrified to even get near an eel, let alone eat one.
Then they try and see if Torch and can fly. Hiccup is convinced that if Torch saw him and Toothless fly that he would copy them, but Toothless refuses to listen to Hiccup when he calls him down to come flying. Snotlout takes this as a chance to "show off" but Hookfang ends up just flying wildly around once again and Snotlout is unable to control him before they land just as shakily as they started.
Torch just begins to move rapidly in a circle, his skin and the air around him sparking as he ascends into the air in a spiral, creating a swirling signature scorch mark on the ground. Everyone is amazed and Fishlegs is finally able to come up with the species name "Typhoomerang" given that Torch spun around like a typhoon and came back like a boomerang.
That night, Toothless is still on guard on the roof of the Haddock house while Hiccup is in his room trying to draw Torch. In the distance Toothless notices the same fire light that he saw the previous night and runs inside Hiccup's room to warn him, but ends up knocking over Hiccup's charcoal pencil, breaking it. Hiccup, annoyed, goes downstairs to get more charcoal and tells Toothless to behave himself, and when Toothless shoves Torch aside to listen for the noise again, Torch takes offense and bites Toothless's tail. The two dragons begin to chase each other around the room aggressively and Torch shots a small fireball at Toothless, igniting Toothless's sleeping area in the process. Hiccup runs back upstairs when he notices the fire and puts it out with his blanket, thinking Toothless set the fire when Torch runs, scared, into Hiccup's arms.
Toothless runs out the window when he realizes Hiccup isn't going to listen to him and goes into the forest to find more obvious evidence to show him. He finally comes across two other baby typhoomerangs in the forest that are scared by a wild boar running through the forest. Torch's mother finds the boar and and thinks it's threatening her babies and engulfs the boar in fire, implying that she kills it. Toothless watches the scene in horror.

The next morning, Hiccup is consoling Gobber about his problem with Toothless and doesn't seem to understand why Toothless is jealous. Gobber tells Hiccup that dragons are just more emotional then Vikings. Then, Toothless runs up to Gobber and Hiccup, trying to warn Hiccup of what he saw the previous night, but his gestures just come off as looking deranged to Hiccup. Fed up with Hiccup not understanding him, Toothless simply grabs Torch and proceeds to the forest to go give him back to his mother, but Gobber goes after them, trying to stop Toothless after Torch wiggles free from his grasp and the two begin a wild chase again. Gobber is unable to catch Toothless, but does find his old panpipes in his forge, claiming that now he can "get the band back together."
Torch hides behind Hiccup's leg and Hiccup angrily tells Toothless to back down. The two have an intense stare down before Gobber starts playing his panpipes, breaking the intensity of the moment and "not helping" as Hiccup says.
Later that evening, Hiccup flies Toothless towards the cove, though Toothless wants to fly Hiccup towards the huge scorch mark Torch's mother made the previous night, but Hiccup turns them away before he sees it. Hiccup claims that Toothless is acting too wild and unpredictable for him to stay and leaves him in the cove until he can figure out what to do with Torch so the two aren't around each other anymore.
That night, Hiccup is sleeping in room without Toothless for the first time in a while, and feels saddened and confused on what to do so that Toothless and Torch get along. In the cove, though, Toothless is woken up by Torch's mother walking angrily through the forest, still looking for her baby. Toothless tries to leave the cove, but can get out on his own and becomes frustrating, wishing someone could understand the danger of the situation.
The next morning in the training arena Astrid tells Hiccup that he did the right thing with Toothless and that he'll snap out of it. Snotlout, though, figures that if Toothless doesn't then Hiccup won't have a dragon to ride and thus can't be the leader of the dragon academy. Astrid simply states that then she'll be in charge.
Tuffnut and Ruffnut then fly into the arena, claiming that they saw "ultimate destruction" in the forest, saying that it was "torched". Looking at Torch and becoming worried, Hiccup tells Ruffnut and Tuffnut to take him to where they were talking about.
In the forest, the teens encounter a giant spiral mark made by Torch's mother and they all realize that a big scorch mark means a bigger typhoomerang. And finally, Torch's mother appears in the sky, spotting her baby with the teens. Hiccup finally realizes that the angry mother looking for Torch was what Toothless was trying to tell him, and they all leave Torch so that he can go back to his mother, but Torch still feels the need to follow Hiccup.
Hiccup runs into the forest, sending the other away so that he can lead the mother away from the village. He runs into the cove--with Torch still following him--as he's being chased by Torch's mother and finally reaches the cove, taking a literal leap of faith and jumps into the cove, calling after Toothless. Toothless catches Hiccup and the two fly out of the cove as Hiccup offers an apology, claiming that he should've listened to Toothless.
But with Torch's mother still following the situation is still dire and Hiccup and Toothless utilize the "evasive maneuvers" they've been practicing to outrun the mother, but she's gun ho about following them when they realize Torch has planted himself on Toothless, behind Hiccup. Finally, thinking to use Torch's mother huge size against her, Hiccup and Toothless perform difficult areal stunts that bring Torch's mother crashing back down to forest.
Waking up, Torches mother is finally happy when a worried Torch decides to go back to her, and his siblings greet him as well.
With the family reunited, Hiccup and Toothless say goodbye to Torch and proceed home. Back at the Haddock house, Hiccup realizes that he should listen to Toothless more because he's just trying to protect him...and is rewarded by a regurgitated fish from Toothless.
Later on, Hiccup and Toothless are out flying, and find the scorch mark made by Torch's mother that now has flowers growing all along the once burnt soil.
