day
Hiccup and Toothless soar over the woods, with the others
following them.
hiccup
Follow me! Low-level evasive maneuvers! Come on, bud!
Hiccup and Toothless fly past trees.
hiccup (v.o.)
When you're riding a dragon, communication is key. You almost
have to read each other's minds.
Hiccup clicks the pedal and Toothless's fin flips open.
snotlout
Hey! What are you doing?
Hookfang flies directly into a tree.
SNOTLOUT
Are you trying to kill me? We gotta go back, I think you
missed a branch.
Hookfang dives through several more trees, crunching as
Snotlout hits each.
SNOTLOUT
Got it!
HICCUP (V.O.)
And you've got to have an open mind, because sometimes your
dragon knows better than you.
Stormfly heads toward a low-level branch.
Astrid
Stormfly, up!
Stormfly tosses Astrid into the air. She lands perfectly on
Stormfly's back.
ASTRID
You were right, Stormfly. It was down. I almost died.
snotlout
Almost died? I would've died!
Snotlout pulls a twig out of his nose.
ASTRID
That's a good look for you.
Snotlout puts the twig back in his nose.
HICCUP
Has anyone seen Fishlegs?
Ruffnut
I saw him yesterday. Does that count?
Toothless circles around a tree and lands on the ground next
to a Gronckle stuck in a tree.
Hiccup dismounts.
HICCUP
Oh, there you are Fishlegs. Are you okay?
Fishlegs is caught between two branches of a tree.
fishlegs
I'm fine. Just hanging out. It's not like I crashed or
anything. Okay, I crashed. There. I said it.
Hiccup jumps up and grabs onto Fishlegs, trying to pull him
down. Hiccup pull off Fishlegs' pants.
HICCUP
Oops.
fishlegs
And there goes my dignity.
Hiccup tries again, this time pulling on Fishlegs' boot. He
keeps tugging, but Fishlegs doesn't budge.
HICCUP
Yeah, you're pretty stuck. Think I know how to get you down,
but you have to stay perfectly still.
FISHLEGS
(skeptical)
Why? What are you going to do?
HICCUP
(to Toothless)
Careful, bud, he's not wearing any pants.
FISHLEGS
Huh? Wait a second, what does my lack of pants have to do--
Toothless releases a blast at the tree, knocking Fishlegs out
from between the branches. Fishlegs falls onto Toothless's back.
FISHLEGS
Thank you.
(to Hiccup)
Um, I believe those are mine.
Hiccup tosses him the pants.
HICCUP
Now, what are we going to do about Meat--
Meatlug falls out of the tree with a giant crash.
HICCUP
--Lug.
fishlegs
Can you not tell everone Meatlug broke the trees? She's
sensitive about her weight.
HICCUP
How did this happen?
FISHLEGS
I don't know! I was just flying along, taking notes
on the flora and fauna... typical guy stuff. And something weird jumped
out of the bushes. It was like a... flaming squirrel!
HICCUP
(skeptial)
Really? A flaming squirrel?
FISHLEGS
Or chipmunk? Or some other flammable rodents? I don't know
Hiccup, it scared us. Isn't that enough for you?
Fishlegs mounts Meatlug and flies away. Hiccup turns to
Toothless and begins to climb on his back.
HICCUP
Did you hear that? A flaming squirrel. Everyone know there's
no such thing as a--
A ball of fire zips past Hiccup and Toothless. Hiccup falls
off Toothless onto the ground.
HICCUP
FLAMING SQUIRREL! Whoa! You saw that, right?
Hiccup peers over a flaming log.
There's a tiny, red dragon hiding between two rocks.
Hiccup inches toward it.
HICCUP
Hey, little guy. Who are you?
Hiccup reaches out his hand. The dragon snaps at it.
HICCUP
Whoa, settle down big fella! I've never seen anything like
him.
Toothless steps nearer and sniffs the air. Toothless snarls
at the dragon.
HICCUP
(to Toothless)
You're not helping. Hey, I think we may have discovered a new
species here!
Toothless pushes Hiccup away from the dragon.
HICCUP
Whoa, hey, Toothless! What has gotten into you? Looks like
he's hurt!
Hiccup inches toward the dragon again.
HICCUP
Don't be afraid, I'm a friend.
The dragon screeches.
Hiccup pulls a couple blades of grass out of his pocket.
HICCUP
Don't be afraid, it's just a little dragon nip.
The dragon sniffs at it, then flies into Hiccup's arms.
Toothless roars.
HICCUP
(to Toothless)
Come on, play nice.
The dragon grabs at him with its claws. Hiccup holds it away
from himself.
HICCUP
Ah! Little dragon, big claws! Come on, let's go. We'll fix
you right up.
ext. dragon
training arena - day
The Riders stand around the tiny dragon in the center of the
arena.
FISHLEGS
This is so exciting! It's a whole new species!
tuffnut
Doesn't look like a flaming squirrel to me.
FISHLEGS
We have no idea what it's capable of! There's no telling what
it might do.
Tuffnut leans down to the dragon.
tuffnut
Flame: do it!
The dragon reaches out and grabs onto Tuffnut's nose.
tuffnut
Ah, get it off, get it off, get it off!
Tuffnut finally pulls the dragon away, but it quickly latches
onto Ruffnut's nose.
TUFFNUT
Oh, that is funny.
Ruffnut yells in pain.
HICCUP
Come on, you guys, this is serious! We have to figure out
what to do with him! He's hurt!
TUFFNUT
(rubbing his nose)
He's hurt?
HICCUP
He's just really scared. He'll settle down.
FISHLEGS
Um, new species, remember? We actually don't know what he'll
do.
ASTRID
Well, somebody's got to take him home.
Everyone takes a step back from Hiccup and the dragon,
leaving them in the center of the circle.
HICCUP
Well big guy, here's your somebody.
The dragon chirps.
int.
hiccup's house - day
Stoick stands in the corner of the house, carrying a bundle
of wood.
Stoick
No, no, no! He's not staying here. I've got a one-dragon
limit!
hiccup
Oh, come on! He's not a very big dragon! Think of him more
like... a flaming squirrel.
stoick
Don't want one of those either.
Stoick drops the wood into a fire pit.
stoick
Toothless, what are you waiting for?
Toothless gathers gas in his mouth, ready to shoot
fire at the wood. But the tiny dragon lets out a blast of flames before
him, setting the wood ablaze.
Toothless jumps back.
stoick
(to Toothless)
Ah, looks like you torched. Oh, that's his name, by the way.
Torch.
HICCUP
So, he can stay?
stoick
Well, can't throw him out now! We just named him!
Toothless growls at Torch.
later
Hiccup sets a giant basket of fish in front of Toothless...
HICCUP
Okay, a hundred for you.
...and a single fish in front of Torch.
hiccup
And one for you. There you go, boys, your first supper
together.
Toothless looks down at the fish and jumps back.
They're all gone.
Torch burps.
Toothless growls, and Torch flies into the rafters.
HICCUP
Whoa, Toothless! You're sure hungry tonight, aren't you, bud?
Toothless snarls at Torch.
later
Hiccup gestures to a slab of rock.
HICCUP
Okay, Torch. This is where you're gonna sleep.
As Hiccup walks away, Torch jumps up onto Toothless's larger
slab of rock.
Toothless grabs Torch by the tail and throws him off the bed.
But when Toothless turns around, Torch is back.
HICCUP
Aw, look at that. He's made himself at home. Toothless, you
don't mind sharing your bed for the night, do you?
Toothless growls and jumps into the rafters.
HICCUP
Hope he sleeps through the night. He hardly ate.
Toothless roars.
HICCUP
(to Toothless)
And you? Go to sleep.
Hiccup pulls the covers over himself. Toothless watches Torch
from the rafters.
EXT. berk -
night
Berk is silent. The fires are out, and the Vikings have
finally gone to sleep.
The woods are dark and lifeless.
Suddenly, a giant red dragon touches down in a clearing, eyes
glowing orange. It roars and releases a stream of fire.
INT.
HICCUP'S HOUSE - night
Toothless hears a noise and wakes up. He jumps out of the
house through the loft window.
Looking over the edge of the cliff, Toothless can see a faint
orange glow coming from the woods. Toothless bares his teeth.
EXT - Kill
Ring - Day
The teens stand in a semi-circle around a wooden table.
Hiccup approaches with the new dragon curled in his arms.
Hiccup
Alright, Torch. Let's figure out what you are.
He sets the dragon on the table to be examined.
Fishlegs
(eager)
Oh! This is so exciting! Documenting a whole new
species... learning all about it...!
Tuffnut
Wait, learning?
Ruffnut crosses her arms.
Ruffnut
No thanks.
Hiccup flips through the dragon manual.
Hiccup
There's nothing in the book of dragons that looks
anything like him.
Fishlegs
We even get to determine what it's called.
(nervous)
Heh. That is... that is a really big responsibility.
I don't know if I'm ready for that.
Snotlout jumps on scene and jams a thumb to his chest,
confident.
Snotlout
I am! I'm gonna name the snot out of it!
Astrid holds a measuring scroll across the wingspan of the
new dragon. Hiccup looks on with the manual still in hand.
Astrid
Twenty inches for the wings.
Hiccup
That's a big wingspan.
Snotlout runs on scene.
Snotlout
Big Wing! Big Span...
He throws out his arms.
Snotlout
Big-Wing-Span!
In an exaggerated gesture, Astrid rolls her eyes
while Hiccup ignores Snotlout completely, instead scribbling the
determined measurements in the Dragon Manual.
Fishlegs
(grandiose)
May I have the honor of administering the claw-test?
Fishlegs reveals a tied scroll from behind his back.
With a dramatic jerk of his arms it unfurls and he holds it out to Torch.
Two, sickle-like, claw-tipped wings shoot out from
either side of the paper. They flex for a beat before slicing the
scroll in half with quick, horizontal swipes.
Fishlegs allows the rest of the scroll to flutter to the
ground. He steps back and observes the sharp hooks with curiosity.
Fishlegs
Look at these talons...
(wiggling fingers)
They're razor-like.
Snotlout pops in from the left, over-eager.
Snotlout
Sharp-Claw! Razor-Feet! Razor-Sharp-Claw-Talon-Feet!
Tuffnut
(to Ruffnut)
Hold on. Is he serious?
Fishlegs sidles up to Hiccup as Hiccup scribbles more
findings in the Dragon Manual and puts an arm around his shoulders.
Fishlegs
You know what's next, don't you?
Hiccup
No. Not really.
Fishlegs
Only the single most important test to determine a
dragon's reaction to eels...
Hiccup flips a page, looking amused, and arches an eyebrow to
prompt Fishlegs to continue.
Fishlegs
The Eel-Reaction-Test!
A basket lid is flipped open. Fishlegs reaches in
and pulls out a black and yellow speckled eel. The teens' dragons
scatter the moment they lay eyes on it.
Fishlegs holds out the eel to the mysterious, new
dragon. It remains on the table and sniffs the eels curiously. With
an unexpected snap of its jaws, it takes the eel in its mouth and
slurps the entire thing.
Fishlegs
(astonished)
He ate it! He ate the eel!
Hiccup is at his side, looking equally amazed. Snotlout
pops in between the two and shoves Fishlegs off screen.
Snotlout
Eel Eater!
(to Hiccup)
Come on, that's perfect.
Again, Hiccup ignores Snotlout and walks over to Fishlegs.
Hiccup
Fishlegs, has there ever been a dragon who wasn't afraid of--
Fishlegs
Never in recorded history.
He puts an arm around Hiccup and glares around at their
surroundings.
Fishlegs
We're in uncharted waters, my friend.
Hiccup walks up to the table and begins to stroke Torch's
head. Torch leans into the touch with affection.
Hiccup
You hear that, Torch? You're one of a kind.
Fishlegs
Now we need to get him to fly.
Hiccup
Maybe if Torch saw Toothless fly?
He looks up to the sky where Toothless can be seen
through the chained roofing. The dragon is perched on an overhanging
craig and glaring out across the sea.
Hiccup
(Calling)
Toothless! Let's take a ride, bud!
Toothless' earfins twitch. He glances down at Hiccup but
otherwise ignores his rider. He continues to focus on the horizon.
Hiccup
(shouting)
Toothless!
Snotlout saunters over to Hookfang, delighted by the turn of
events.
Snotlout
(snickering)
Ha, ha, ha! So much for the dragon trainer. We've
got this!
He hops on Hookfang's neck and grabs a hold of both
horns. Torch squeaks and gives the pair his full attention. Hookfang
grins as only a dragon can, equally as eager to show off.
Snotlout
Watch
and learn!
Hookfang pushes off from the ground but, to Snotlout's
surprise, unexpectedly shoots through the door and out of the Ring.
Snotlout
Hooookfang!
Hookfang soars and spins between rock-stacks
protruding from the ocean. He performs a series of flips and aerial
acrobatics that have Snotlout screaming, grunting, and holding onto his
dragon's horns for dear life.
The gang watches from the floor of the Kill Ring.
Toothless ignores Hookfang and Snotlout, even as their shadow passes
overhead. He looks thoroughly unamused.
Finally done showing off, Hookfang swoops back into
the Ring and lowers his neck to the ground so Snotlout can dismount.
Snotlout looks a little worse for wear. His helmet is askew and he's
breathless.
Snotlout
(Wheezing - to Torch)
Okay, your turn.
The teens give Snotlout blank stares but Torch crawls forward
with enthusiasm
Snotlout
Don't think you have to live up to that.
Torch flaps off the table and the teens step in
around him. All are keen on seeing Torch fly. Instead, Torch
circles
the ground again and again.
Ruffnut
What's he doing?
Astrid
I think something's wrong.
Tuffnut
(put out)
Aw man, we broke him!
Hiccup
Maybe he can't fly?
A spark ignites from Torch's mouth. Torch begins to
spin faster, the spark on-going and crackling at a high-pitched scream.
The teens lean back and shield their faces from the errant heat.
Torch spirals into the air, wings flapping, with a trail of sparkling
fire beneath him. The teens watch Torch rocket around the Ring in
absolute awe, which is expressed by the occasional soft 'wow!' and
'oh!'.
Torch ends his flight in the very center of the Ring
were he spins in a fast, tight ball. The sparks go out and he drops to
the ground. His wings catch enough air to make a soft landing. His
demonstration over, he immediately jumps into Hiccup's awaiting arms.
Hiccup
You...are one incredible little dragon!
Ruffnut
Woah... Look at that burn mark!
The teens are gathered around a black spiral scorched into
the rock floor.
Tuffnut holds up a smoking arm to his sister
Tuffnut
Look at this burn mark.
Fishlegs
Did you see how it flew?
(circling a finger in the air)
It spun like... like a typhoon!
Astrid
And he came back just like a boomerang!
Snotlout jumps in their faces.
Snotlout
Hot-Spitter! Flaming-Combacker!
Fishlegs
No.
Fishlegs dramatically waves a hand in the air.
Fishlegs
Typhoomerang.
Snotlout
Typhoomerang...? Nah, I don't get it.
Once more, Astrid rolls her eyes.
EXT -
Haddock House - Night
Toothless is perched on Hiccup's roof. His hide
blends into the night as he surveys his surroundings. From inside we
can hear the young Typhoomerang screeching and cooing.
Hiccup
(O.S.)
Okay, Torch. Hold still.
Inside, Hiccup sits at his desk
with a charcoal stick in hand and his notebook open to a blank page.
Torch is crawling on the ground with Hiccup's breast hat on his head.
Hiccup
I'm trying to draw you. You're
getting your own chapter.
Torch continues to clunk around
with the helmet tilted adorably. Hiccup tries to capture the
Typhoomerang's attention enough for a good pose by growling at it. His
hand accompanies the noise in a flexing, claw-like motion.
Hiccup
Gerr... Rarr, rarr! Rarr!
Torch chirps back at him.
Toothless listens to Hiccup's
comical growling from outside. A much louder and far more ferocious
roar sounds from the distance. Toothless snaps to attention. He
spies
an ominous orange glow rising from the forest. Wasting no time,
Toothless scrambles over the roof tiles and slides in through Hiccup's
bedroom window.
He approaches Hiccup so suddenly
that Hiccup is startled. He falls falls back from his chair. The
charcoal stick hits the ground and crumbles into pieces.
Hiccup
(upset)
Toothless! Look what you did!
Toothless roars at Hiccup. He's
agitated that Hiccup isn't realizing the danger on the horizon.
Hiccup stands from the ground.
Hiccup
(annoyed)
And now I've got to get more charcoal.
(to Toothless)
Toothless, you behave yourself while I'm
gone.
He walks towards the stairs and
Torch tries to follow. Toothless snarls at the other dragon as he
passes. Hiccup turns, oblivious to Toothless' annoyance, and holds up
a hand to stop Torch.
Hiccup
Hey, it's okay, Big Guy. Be right back.
Hiccup leaves and Toothless starts
growling at Torch again. He is cut off by the same, distant draconic
scream he heard earlier. He looks to the sky, exposed by Hiccup's
roof-top window, and moves towards it. Torch scrambles to stop him and
chomps down on Toothless' tail. Toothless howls, furious and fed up
with the intrusive dragon, and begins to chase Torch around the room.
Torch shoots a small flame at Toothless, which catches on the wooden
floorboards.
From downstairs, Hiccup spies the glow of
flames out of the corner of his eye. He rushes back up to his room.
Hiccup
Toothless!
Toothless is still chasing Torch
around the room. Hiccup grabs the blanket from his bed and bats out
the flames, coughing. As soon as he releases the blanket from his
grip, Torch dives into his arms, seeking refuge. Toothless holds his
body low to the ground and growls.
Hiccup
Wh-what is going on here?
(to Toothless)
Toothless, why did you do this? What
is wrong with you?
Toothless is upset and hurt. He roars
at Hiccup before escaping out the window.
Hiccup
Toothless! Wait!
Toothless ignores him and runs off into the
night. From Hiccup's arms, Torch chirps.
Hiccup
It's okay, big guy. He's starting to
worry me too.
Ext -
Berk's forest - Night
Toothless races through the forest
towards the source of the distressed roars he has been hearing all
night. He no longer has the support of his rider so he must take on
the investigation himself.
He comes upon two other
Typhoomerangs playing in a clearing. They are the same size as Torch
but different colors. The Typhoomerangs look up at the sound of
something approaching. A wild boar runs out of some brush and charges
the two dragons. The dragons turn and run. We see the boar skid to
a
stop.
From the shadows a giant
Typhoomerang rears up. She shows off her impressive wingspan just
before she bellows an ear-shattering roar at the boar.
Toothless watches from behind a
tree as the boar tries to escape the angered dragon. It's blocked off
by a stream of flame. The Typhoomerang spirals in one spot in the air
while releasing a steady torrent of fire to surround the boar that
threatened her children. She glares down at her victim, unforgiving.
Fire is reflected in Toothless's wide and
worried eyes.
INT -
Forge - day
A pair of forceps pinch at a pile of
burning coal.
Hiccup
(to Gobber)
It's weird. It's like, Toothless is
jealous. Which is great. So... My first girlfriend is a dragon.
Gobber listens to Hiccup's problems
with one ear as he works. He walks to an anvil and begins to hammer the
heated iron he just pulled from the forge.
Gobber
Another thing we have in common.
In the background, Hiccup holds out
his arms. Torch, who had been perched on a table in the open shot,
hops into them from offscreen.
Gobber pauses in his hammering and looks
back at Hiccup.
Gobber
Something must be going on under the
surface. Dragons are complex creatures, Hiccup.
(taking up the hammer again)
They operate on many emotional levels.
Me? I've only got the one.
Toothless races around a neighboring house
and gallops to the forge. He announces his presence with a panicked roar.
Hiccup
(unnerved)
Woah! Okay, Toothless!
Hiccup's attempt to settle his
dragon goes unheeded. Toothless circles the ground in angry, agitated
hops. He rears up and claws the air and gives another roar. His
behavior is rushed and perturbing.
Hiccup
(to Gobber)
You see? This is what I've been
talking about.
He gestures to Toothless. Toothess
rears and roars again, longer and louder. Hiccup is becoming increasingly
worried.
Hiccup
Toothless, settle down!
Torch lurches from Hiccup's grip
and jumps to the ground directly in front of Toothless. As he scuttles
about to face Hiccup, Toothless snatches the younger dragon in his maw
and moves to make off with Torch.
Hiccup
(desperate)
Gobber! Grab him!
With impressive speed for a
one-legged viking of his side, Gobber is suddenly situated directly in
Toothless' path. Toothless pauses, Torch still in his mouth.
Gobber
You want to dance, big boy? 'Cause
I've got my dancing shoe on!
Gobber taps his foot to emphasize said
dancing shoe.
Torch, limbs flailing in the air,
takes the opportunity to spark up. Toothless releases the suddenly
fiery dragon and Torch darts off screen. Toothless isn't far behind.
Gobber jumps onto Toothless' tail as he
passes.
Gobber
Gotcha! Wooah!
Gobber's weight is barely enough to
slow Toothless down. He is dragged along for the dragon chase,
refusing to let go of the limb. Torch races about the forge which, in
turn, leads Toothless to bound through the establishment as well.
Gobber is thrown against pillars and tables, trying his best to stop
the Night Fury. Tools are upended and workspaces overturned.
Eventually it becomes too much for
the blacksmith and Gobber is forced to let go. He slides across the
ground, pasted a disconcerted Hiccup, and comes to a stop before a
forgotten, low shelf.
He looks up, disoriented, and spies some
abandoned pan pipes.
Gobber
(delighted)
My pan pipes!
He stands, the pan pipes in hand.
Gobber
Now I can get the band back together!
Just outside the forge, Toothless
is still in pursuit of Torch. Torch scuttles behind Hiccup's legs.
Hiccup stands firm, even with a wild Night Fury before him. He's had
enough.
Hiccup
Toothless!
Toothless skids to a stop. His face is
inches from Hiccup's.
Hiccup
(demanding)
Back. Down.
He stares at Toothless. His jaw is
set forward and his expression is unyielding. Toothless glares right
back. Their staring match is accompanied by a light-hearted tune.
Gobber walks in from the right. He is
happily playing his pan pipes, oblivious to the tension.
Hiccup
(To Gobber - through grit teeth)
Not. Helping.
Gobber opens his eyes and realizes the
situation. He lowers the pan pipes from his mouth.
Gobber
Sorry.
Hiccup
(to Toothless)
I don't know what's gotten into you, but I
don't like it.
Toothless gives a groaning growl and runs
off. Gobber plays a more mellow tune on his pan pipes.
Hiccup slowly turns and glares at him.
He finds Gobber's lack of focus inappropriate for the present situation.
Gobber
(unapologetic)
What?
Ext - sky
- Dusk
Hiccup and Toothless soar over the
mountains of Berk. Behind them the sky is pink from the setting sun.
Hiccup
Woah! WOAH!
Toothless misses their usual turn
into the cove and keeps flying. He ignores Hiccup's calls of distress.
Hiccup's confusion is ever greater.
Hiccup
Toothless! The cove... is
this way!
He jerks his head over his left shoulder
but the gesture is unseen by his dragon. His voice echoes across the
landscape.
Hiccup
(O.S.)
Where are you going?
(with finality)
No! We're going to the cove!
Against the usual harmony of their
flight, Hiccup moves the tailfin to spread out flat. Toothless is
forced to fall back from his destination. They turn just before the
giant, spiraled scorch in a clearing of fallen trees comes into
Hiccup's sight. Toothless' intention of showing Hiccup evidence of
Torch's mother fails.
Toothless and Hiccup fly down into
the cove. As soon as Toothless touches ground, Hiccup dismounts. He
turns and points at the Night Fury.
Hiccup
Okay. You've gotta stay here.
Toothless ducks his head and his lips pull
back. He did not expect this from his rider.
Hiccup
(remorseful)
I had never thought bringing Torch home
would lead to this. I've gotta separate you two until I can figure this
out.
Toothless hisses at the idea. When
Hiccup turns to walk out of the cove Toothless bounds around to block him.
Hiccup
(warning)
Toothless... This is serious. You've
got to stay here.
Hiccup tries to walk again and, again,
Toothless blocks him. This time he roars out in his disagreement.
Hiccup
Okay. Big, crazy, out-of-control
dragon blocking my way out.
He pretends to give up as though it
is a pointless endeavor to defy Toothless. Toothless relaxes a
smidgeon. Hiccup takes one step away from the entrance... before he
pivots on his prosthetic and darts around an off-guard Toothless.
Hiccup
Or not!
He makes it between a narrow gap
between rocks just in time to escape Toothless. The Night Fury is left
to roar helplessly at Hiccup's retreating back. His cries of warning
are not understood by the human.
Hiccup makes it to the top of the
cove and glances back with a sigh. He hates having to do this to his
best friend but he doesn't know what else to do.
From the floor of the cove, Toothless gives
one, last, lamenting roar.

hiccup's house - continuing
Hiccup lays in bed staring at the ceiling. His
expressions says it all; he misses Toothless. He gives a silent glance
towards Torch who is sleeping on Toothless' stone bed, snoring quietly.
A moment later Hiccups eyes return to the ceiling as he continues to
worry about Toothless.
ext. the

Toothless hangs from the branch on a tree unable to
sleep. The forest is silent, until suddenly the CRASH of falling trees
catches Toothless' attention. Across the cove a tree in the forest
above falls over.
Toothless gracefully falls from his tree and bounds
across the cove. From a rock on the ground Toothless observes as the
Torch's mom stomps through the forest with heavy footsteps. Toothless
leaps onto the rocky wall of the cove, attempting to scale the steep
sides. He nearly makes it, but fails to find the purchase he needs to
lift himself over the lip of the wall. He falls back down, giving a
frustrated look at his tail fin. Defeated, Toothless ROARS twice into
the night sky as he watches Torch's mom walk away, trampling the forest
and knocking down trees as she goes.

You did the right thing with Toothless.
INT.
DRAGON TRAINING ACADEMY - CONTINUING
Astrid and Snotlout are casually mounted on their dragons. In
front of them Hiccup is holding and petting Torch.
ASTRID
(continuing)
He'll snap out of it.
Snotlout
Ya, but what if he doesn't.
(to Hiccup)
Then you won't have a dragon to ride, and if you don't have a
dragon to ride then you can't be the leader of the dragon academy.
ASTRID
(to Snotlout)
Ya, then I'd take over. Do you really want that?
Ruffnut and Tuffnut enter astride Barf and Belch.
TUFFNUT
You guys would not believe what we just saw.
snotlout
Excuse me, we're having a power struggle.
hiccup
We're not having a power struggle.
TUFFNUT
The whole forest; ultimate destruction.
Tuffnut punctuates his statement with a small wave and nod.
RUFFnut
(grinning)
It was beautiful. The whole thing was torched.
Hiccup stands silently for a moment, pensive.
hiccup
Torched?
Hiccup looks down at Torch in his arms, confused.
HICCUP
(continuing)
Show me.
EXT. woods
outside berk - DAY
Hiccup and Astrid fly in on Stormfly from out of
frame, followed by the other teens and their dragons. They soar through
the forest and eventually stop at the clearing scorched by Torch's
mother.
ruffnut
Like we said; ultimate destruction.
The teens gather together at the edge of the burn mark.
hiccup
We've seen that burn mark before.
astrid
Not this big.
fishlegs
You know what this means. Big burn mark--
HICCUp
Big Typhoomerang.
Hiccup looks up to see Torch's mother flying ahead. She
breathes fire as she scours the forest floor for her baby.
tuffnut
He looks really mad.
hiccup
Uh, it's not a he, it's a she. That's Torch's mother.
astrid
(realizing)
Torch is a baby.
Torch pops up from behind Fishlegs. He clings tothe back of
Fishlegs' shirt.
hiccup
That's what Toothless was trying to tell me.
Fishlegs holds Torch in his hand as he watches Torch's mother
fly above.
fishlegs
Whoever gets between that mother and this baby is gonna get
fried!
Fishlegs hurriedly passed Torch to Tuffnut.
Tuffnut
You take it!
Tuffnut passes Torch to Ruffnut.
ruffnut
I don't want it.
Ruffnut immediately passes Torch off to Snotlout.
snotlout
Just leave it and lets get out of here.
Snotlout passes Torch to Hiccup and backs away. Hiccup
watches and Torch's mother continues to burn the forest.
Torch CHIRPS as he recognizes his mother. His mother
hears the noise and turns to face the teens, spotting Hiccup with her
baby.
hiccup
Uh oh.
The mother Typhoomerang dives toward the group. Hiccup places
Torch on the ground and shoos him away.
HICCup
(continuing)
Now, uh, go home to your mama.
Torch's mother continues her descent, breathing a think
stream of fire and smoke at the vikings.
Hiccup
Run!
The teens run into the woods toward their dragons. Torch
follows behind with his mother in pursuit.
hiccup
You guys go that way, I'll lead her back into the forest away
from the village.
Hiccup continues running away from Torch and his mother,
moving in opposite direction to the other teens and their dragons.
astrid
Hiccup!
Astrid reaches as if to stop Hiccup, but he's far to
far away for her to reach him. She watches as he runs into the woods
with Torch and the mother Typhoomerang giving chase.
Torch's mother ROARS as--

The ROAR wakes Toothless from a nap. He's wide eyed and alert.
EXT. THE
WOODS - same time
Hiccup runs between the trees as Torch follows
closely behind. Shortly after, Torch's mother whips past shooting fire
towards Hiccup.
hiccup
(to Torch)
Oooh, please stop following me.
The chase continues towards the cove. Hiccup sprints toward
the lip of the cove, with Torch and his mother not far behind.
hiccup
Toothless!
Hiccup reaches the cove and flings himself off the
lip into it. A soft THUMP noise and the sound of Toothless ROARING is
heard and out flies Toothless from the cove with Hiccup riding on his
back.
Hiccup
Thanks bud. I'm so sorry. I should have listened to you.
Torch's mother leans forward and shoots a stream of
flame at Toothless and Hiccup. They dodge the flame, ascending into the
sky above.
hiccup
Toothless evasive maneuvers.
Toothless and Hiccup fly in between the giant stone
pillars of Berk's coastline with Torch's mother behind them. Hiccup
looks back, confused.
Hiccup
Oh why won't she stop?
As if to answer his question, Torch pops out from behind him.
Hiccup looks back at the baby dragon, stunned.
hiccup
(continuing)
What the-? Torch? What are you doing? You need to be with
your mother.
Torch makes no effort to leave, so the pursuit continues.
hiccup
Toothless we have to try something else. We'll use her size
against her.
Toothless up!
Toothless swerves around a stone pillar. At Hiccup's command
he transitions into a steep climb. Torch's mother follows closely.
hiccup
Now dive!
Toothless moves into a sharp nosedive, leading
Torches mother back over the forest. At the last moment Toothless pulls
up, just missing the tips of the trees. Torch's mother is unable to to
slow her descent fast enough and crashes to the ground. Toothless lands
in front of the defeated Typhoomerang with Hiccup and Torch on his back.
hiccup
I hope she's okay.
Torch leaps from Toothless' back and nuzzles his
mother's face. She awakens, and Torch's siblings disembark from their
mother's back. It's a happy family reunion.
Hiccup
Good job bud. Everybody's back where they belong.
Hiccup gives Toothless a loving pat on the head,
which Toothless returns with a smile. They observe as Torch and his
siblings clamber back onto their mother's wings.
hiccup
Goodbye Torch.
Hiccup gives a small wave and Torch and family ascend in a
spiral of sparks up into the sky.
hiccup
Let's go home Toothless.
Toothless purrs in approval and takes off once again.

gobber
(re: the music)
Ah. I wrote this just for the occasion.
Gobber resumes playing the panpipes.
hiccup
(to Toothless)
I should have known you were just trying to protect me.
That's what you do.
Without warning Toothless perks up and regurgitates half a
fish directly into Hiccup's lap.
hiccup
And then you do that.
EXT. WOODS
OUTSIDE BERK - DAY
TOOTHLESS' POV:
Trees whip past, twisting and turning.

Communication between dragon and rider goes both ways.

Not only must the dragon follow the riders lead, but the
rider must listen to the dragon as well.
The pair enter the clearing that Torch's mother
destroyed earlier. The burn mark is now fully covered in bright blue
and purple flowers. They circle the spiral of flowers, and ascend into
the sky.
