WARNING: This description contain heavy spoilers for the entire episode
The episode opens with Heather running madly through the forest, trying to get to the beach where she spots a small getaway boat. But, before she can climb into it the boat explodes before her, the work of of Astrid and Stormfly. Astrid comments on her breaking out of prison many times, but no matter how many times she escapes she's not "getting off this island". Stormfly carries her back into prison and Heather is put back in her jail cell.
Heather in Berk's prison
Heather tries to plead with Astrid to let her go back to Outcast Island, but Astrid's not hearing it. Heather then confesses that Alvin has her parents, but all Astrid can remember was her story when they first met about her parents being captured by pirates. Heather claims to have made it all up in the desperation to get the group to trust her, but Astrid is done with her "lies"; she has too many stories.
Meanwhile, on Outcast Island, Savage and some of the other Outcasts are trying to get the Book of Dragons--which apparently fell out of the grasp in the previous episode--from a wild gronckle who has capitalized ownship of it. Trying not to anger it, Savage sends another Outcast to get it, but he's just mauled by the gronckle.
At the academy the teens are training for their encounter with the Outcasts to get the Book of Dragons back, practicing special fighting and defense moves. Fishlegs, though, is skeptical that Alvin will just hand over the book to them and Astrid agrees, but comes up with an alternative that he'd definitely give the book to Heather. Everyone is against the idea of letting Heather go, Astrid claims that letting Heather go isn't part of her idea. This confuses everyone.
Alvin reading the Book of Dragons
On Outcast Island, Savage returns to Alvin with the Book and Alvin asks where Heather is. Savage reports that she was "captured after she made the drop", news that Alvin doesn't particularly seemed phased by. He looks at the book in approval.
That night on Berk, the teens are loading a boat with supplies on Thor's Beach while Fishlegs releases his nerves about the plan perhaps not working. Hiccup reassures Fishlegs that the plan will work until he spots someone walking up in the distance...someone who looks like Heather. Ruffnut and Tuffnut immediately lung on the girl, pinning her down to the sand and telling 'Heather' that she has to stay in her cell. 'Heather' punches them both square in the face to reveal that she's not Heather at all, but Astrid in Heather's clothes and her hair dyed black.
Everyone is impressed with Astrid's transformation--except for Tuffnut--and Hiccup asks her if she's sure with the plan. Astrid simply says they really don't have any other choice if they want to get the Book back. Although Hiccup wishes her luck and tells her to stay safe it's obvious he isn't too fond of the idea of her going to face Alvin alone.
Astrid as Heather
In the prison cells on Berk, Bucket is bringing Heather some dinner only to see the cell empty. Upset that she's, yet again, broken out, he opens the door and looks for her only to be ambushed by her and knocked out. Heather drags Bucket in the cell and closes it, apologizing for knocking him out but claims that she has to find her parents and no one is going to stop her.
Near Outcast Island, Astrid is pulling into the shore, hiding behind the fog as she comes in. As soon as she steps on the sand a group of Outcasts and Savage appear, all armed in the expectation of an enemy arriving instead. They seem to be buy Astrid's disguise but Savage orders to have her gotten rid of in the air that they don't need her anymore. Astrid makes up a quick excuse, claiming that they do need to her to decipher the book properly as she's "watched them" and "learned from them" (referring to the dragon trainers on Berk). Savage mulls over her words but seems to buy them as well.
Back on Berk, Heather has made it to Stormfly's shed and startles her awake. Heather seems to still be in Stormfly's good graces though, and Heather is able to mount her, claiming that she needs a rid to Outcast Island to go find Astrid. Stormfly happily complies once Heather says 'Astrid' and the two fly off.
Near Outcast Island, the other teens are flying at the shore as well, coming into the island under the cover of night. Fishlegs expresses his fear of flying directly into a "wild dragon nesting ground" but Hiccup simply says if he has a better idea let him know.
In Alvin's lair, Savage has brought Astrid to him and Alvin isn't buying that 'Heather' is needed and claims that she's just saying that to save herself. An Outcast attempts to use the book on a nadder they're captured but he upsets the nadder and it shots it's spikes at him. Astrid thinks on her feet and grabs a shield, blocking the spikes before they can hit anyone. Alvin is impressed.
Back with the teens they've encountered a flock of wild dragons on the island flying towards them. Luckily the plan entails that all the teens carry baskets of fish with them and they lunge the fish down into the water. The dragons abandon their chase after the teens and go after the fish, except one nadder who clips at a fish that Snolout is carrying and drags him off Hookfang. Hiccup goes into the save him, telling Snotlout to drop the fish--which Snotlout isn't to keen on doing, claiming it's his lunch--and he does so and teens fly smoothly to the heart of the island.
Astrid with the Book of Dragons
That morning in the Outcast's mock-kill ring Astrid is put the test to get a dragon under control since she's proven her skills. Though she tells Alvin she needs the book as she "didn't memorize it" and Alvin surprisingly gives it to her. In the ring, Astrid is to face off with a Nightmare which she doesn't have too much knowledge on. She looks to the book but none of her tactics seem to be working. Then she remember back when they were training the previous day and Snotlout bent Hookfang's horns to the ground to calm him down and tries that approach, which fortunately works! Alvin is even more impressed.
As soon as the dragon seems to take a liking to Astrid she climbs on him, the book in hand, and attempts to fly away. Alvin wonders where she's going "without her parents". Astrid is shocked when he actually brings out ca couple who really is Heather's parents. Alvin makes it clear that either she gives him the book back or she can leave and he'll kill them.
In a secluded part of Outcast Island, the teens sit in wait for Astrid to come with the book, as according to the plan. While everyone grows impatient Fishlegs states that Astrid's already an hour late and that Alvin must've figured out the disguise. Tuffnut even comments again that Astrid's costume "sucked". Hiccup shuts everyone up saying that Astrid will be there because "it's Astrid", but it's still obvious he's growing more and more worried.
Alvin with Heather's Parents
In the mock-kill ring, Astrid is at odds on what to do now that it's obvious that Heather really was telling the truth. She asks for Heather's parents to come over and Alvin shoves them over. Of course they don't recognize her since she's not really Heather and Astrid whispers that she's a friend of her's and that she's there to help. She tells Heather's parents to get to the ground as she throws the Book of Dragons up into the air and then punches the nightmare in the ring in the nose, causing him to shot fire right in Alvin's direction.
The fire does keep them back for too long, though, and Astrid catches the Book Alvin throws a bola and constricts Heather's father. Astrid goes to help him up but then looses the book. Alvin picks her up by the head as she struggles to get the book back, but when Alvin removes his hand he notice the black dye from Astrid's hair on his hand.
In the secluded area where the other teens reside, Hiccup is shifting his leg nervously in wait for Astrid and is thrilled when she finally shows up, with Heather's parents in tow. Astrid waves but the smile on her face is rather fake. Hiccup flies over to her, wondering who Heather's parents are. Astrid only has time to answer before Alvin and the Outcasts come out from behind the trees, armed and surround them. It was a set up.
Alvin cunningly takes a shot and asks Hiccup if he wants to join him, as he's a "smart boy" but of course Hiccup refuses. And thus the battle begins.
The battle seems evenly matched until the Outcasts suddenly claim the upper hand. Binding and putting nets over the teens and dragons and soon none of their attacks seem to be working. Things start to look pretty bad until a mysterious source of help begins to set them free and burn their bindings.
Heather to the Rescue!
It's Heather and Stormfly! Astrid apologizes for not believing Heather and climbs onto Stormfly, who then picks up Heather's parents and the teens all regain their bearings having been freed. They all perform the skills they practice during training, systematically taking out the Outcast's defenses as they make their getaway.
But Alvin's not going to make it that easy for them. He takes Savage and places him into a catapult, shotting him upwards and as he falls, he takes Astrid with him. Astrid is taken by Alvin as soon as she hits the ground and Hiccup is quick to go after her on Toothless. Alvin hangs Astrid over the side of a cliff, telling Hiccup to surrender or else he'll drop her. Hiccup doesn't offer a response but plans to have Toothless blast Alvin. Before he gets a chance to, though, the nightmare that Astrid befriended in the ring flies under-head, smiling at her. Astrid tells Hiccup not to have Toothless shoot and Hiccup-confused--obeys. Moments later the nightmare flies upwards, knocking out Alvin and releasing Astrid from his grasp.
"Surrender or I'll...."
She takes the book from Alvin before he wakes up and flies off on the nightmare, Hiccup and Toothless close behind her. Hiccup is confused as to who the nightmare is and Astrid just replies "a new friend I made".
Alvin is angered that he's, once again, been bested by the teens but is amazed, though, that the nightmare came and protected Astrid. He goes back to his original plan that he wants to capture Hiccup if he ever wants to have dragons under his control.
Astrid and Heather finally friends
Finally back on Berk, Heather and her parents are preparing to board a ship to go back home, but before Astrid thanks Astrid for risking her life to save her parents and gives her a hug. She then tells Hiccup that she'll miss him as well but denies him a hug. Hiccup does, though, tell her that if she ever needs help again to just ask for it instead, and she humbly agrees.
As Heather sails away with her parents Snotlout asks her to write him but she declines his offer as well, and at the docks Hiccup and Astrid watch the boat go off into the horizon. Hiccup looks over at Astrid suggestively before she punches him lightly in the shoulder, smiling.
New Information:
- Berk apparently has prisons.
- The Book of Dragons fell into a dragon's grasp at the end of the previous episode.
- Alvin and a lot of the other Outcasts can, in fact, read.
- Astrid did dye her hair black, and made the clothes look identical to Heather's. What she used to dye her hair is unknown.
- Hiccup and Astrid must've made up in between episodes, as their fine as of this episode.
- A quirk is that the old Sven model used in episode 106 (that was changed in 109) returns in this episode, but as Heather's father.
- Another quirk would be that during the ending battle the whereabouts of who had the book weren't too clear. The teens were leaving the battle, even though none of them had gotten to book from Alvin on screen.
- And yet another quirk would be that the scene where Toothless shots at the Outcast and his blast does little damage was actually a goof. Toothless is much more powerful than that.
